The Truth About Heroin

Heroin is classified by the Drug Enforcement Administration of the United States under the Opiates/Opoids and Narcotic Analgesics division. The approved medicinal uses of this drug include analgesia, suppression of opiate withdrawal and sedation.

Heroin, also known as diacetylmorphoine and diamorphine, is a schedule I drug with approved medical use and an extremely high liability. It is available to the medical community at this time for very limited uses.

It is a partially synthetic drug in the opoid family that is synthesized in part from morphine. Morphine is a derivative of the poppy. Under the alias diamorphine, diacetylmorphine it is used by the medical administration as a controlled drug in the UK.

It is illegal to sell, consume and produce heroin without a specialized medical license in the United States, Belgium, Denmark, Iran, India, Germany, Canada, Australia and the UK. Although some countries have allowed procurements of large seized drugs to be redistributed within the country’s medical community legally for research and manufacturing knowledge.

Medically, heroin is given the name diamorphine, diacetylmorphine and prescribed as an analgesic. It is given to treat chronic and surgical pain and major trauma. It is used for many terminal illnesses during the last stages including cancer.

The short-term effects of heroin include a state of alertness followed by drowsiness and dryness of the mouth. More severe short-term effects include muscular weakness, slow respiratory breathing, and a sudden flushing of the dermis.

The long-term effects of heroin include many severe afflictions to many parts of the body. They include a strong addiction, tolerance and dependence of heroin, collapsed veins in the circulatory system, decreased functions of the liver and infections in the heart valves. All of these effects can lead to death.

The risks of use are also commonly deadly. The risks of contracting HIV or hepatitis through intravenous use are great.
