Sober Living
Sober Living
Description: Sober living is a place where addicts live together to support each other in early recovery. Programs vary in intensity and requirements. Some are simply houses where addicts live together. Others have house meetings, curfews, weekly requirements, bed checks, medication disbursement, drug testing, etc.
Advantages: Sober living can provide a lot more security for an addict who is in early recovery. Some people use sober living while attending an intensive outpatient program (IOP). Others use it following residential treatment and still others as a stand-alone option to just get them out of a less-than-supportive environment.
Duration: Sober living can be utilized usually for just a few months. Depending on the expense and the number of beds available, some sober living houses can offer clients the chance to stay for a longer period of time and gain strong footing into their life of recovery, before moving back home or out on their own.
Target Clientele: Sober living is helpful for those who have a lot of stress in their home environment, other users in their home environment, lots of triggers at home or in the neighborhood or are who just need the support of living with others who are working towards recovery together.
Knowledge Base: Sober living programs vary, as stated earlier. So, some will provide helpful skills and tools for recovery. Meetings and on-site counselors can offer new knowledge and support for addicts just starting out into recovery. Other sober living houses may provide no new knowledge or training whatsoever. It will thus be up to the potential client to decide what he or she needs in a sober living facility.
