Choosing a Drug Rehab Program; Questions You Should be Asking
When seeking a drug rehab program, it is important to know how to compare and contrast different treatment centers. Following are several key factors that will help you determine if a drug treatment program is right for you.
1) With the current considerations of economic hardship, it is important to look at the stability of the state where the program is located, to see if the business might be struggling as well. Currently, Utah tops the national ratings, according to Forbes (2011), for the health and growth of businesses in each state.
2) Some drug treatment programs literally offer a cot on the floor with little other accommodations. Does the treatment center you’re looking at feel like a punishment to be there, or is it clean, inviting, and comfortable? Does it feel like a home away from home?
3) You may come across treatment programs that have minimal counseling included. Will you be receiving individual and group counseling? Individual counseling should be offered twice per week in a good program. With group counseling being one of the most important offerings in drug rehab, the program should also offer group counseling every weekday.
4) Variety is vital for developing a well-balanced recovery program after treatment. What does the program offer, besides the usual basics? Do they offer music therapy? Art therapy? What about exercise and meditation? Is there a recreational therapy program for learning to have fun outside of using?
5) Medication management is vital to the recovery process. Does the treatment center have a medical director (a trained physician) who meets with and monitors patient prescriptions and medical issues?
6) Research shows that treatment for family members is pivotal to the success of the addict in recovery. Does the treatment program offer family services? Are these services available by teleconferencing for families out of the area? Is it included in the program price?
7) Last but not least, does the program incorporate 12-step programs (shown to improve odds of maintaining recovery after treatment) and other aftercare options? Does the program help individuals develop a personal plan to include both aftercare and other recovery skills needed to prevent relapse?
While this is not a comprehensive list, these are some of the important issues you should be aware of when looking for drug treatment.
